A fade looks its best for the first ten days. Here is how to make those ten days twenty.

• wash your hair every other day, not every day
• leave the outline round your ears alone — that's where it's easiest to slip
• a drop of oil in your beard every evening, then a comb

Come back after three weeks: the blend is still readable then, so it's refreshed, not started over.
