Balayage or highlights: what to ask for

Both give lighter strands, but they grow out quite differently.

Highlights

The colour starts at the root, in even strips. It looks neat, but the regrowth shows after 6–8 weeks.

Balayage

I paint the colour by hand, from mid-length down, with a soft blend. The regrowth hardly shows, so you come back every 3–4 months.

• for short hair, highlights work better
• for medium and long hair, balayage
• after either: a sulphate-free shampoo and a mask once a week
